Well, I'm back
Nov. 3rd, 2006 08:17 amThe return trip was thankfully uneventful to make up for the 2-day insanity of my outward journey. I'm very proud that I managed to make it through four cancelled flights, two seriously delayed flights, and leaving and arriving at different airports at both ends from what was on my itinerary in order to reach my friend from Norway whom I may not see again, unless I fancy a trip to Norway! It was a lovely visit. I don't feel like babbling about it here too much; there's not much to say except, "whee, that was nice!" It was great to see autumn on the east coast again, schoolbuses and rain and yellow maple leaves and fading crickets and green grass and kids going out trick-or-treating.
So. I didn't get far with the ship manifesto because I had too many interruptions and/or was tired, but I wrote one more
pyre_flies drabble, Cold Shoulder, and had a fit of obsessive compulsiveness (yes,
cupcakemonster, laugh and point) smoothing out the writing in Till Death Do Us Part. I was goaded by a review on ff.net complaining that sometimes I had too much description, other times not enough, and the reader couldn't always understand it. Of course, he was 14. Maybe he was not getting the parts I was leaving up to the reader's imagination. I'm not sure my tweaks helped, but I feel more satisfied knowing it's not quite as half-assed.

Till Death Cont'd
Oct. 20th, 2006 08:47 amWow. I'm crossposting this one on ff.net, and one of those readers immediately removed me from her fav list when I uploaded the following chapter. What an eloquent example of voting with one's feet! Consider yourself warned.

Tetris writing
Oct. 20th, 2006 02:15 amHmmm. cupcake's recent mention of Tetris is an apt analogy for one part of the writing process as well.
I tend to wing it fairly heavily, very seldom writing to an outline. (Never do this.)
Description is easier for me than plot. I just noticed how my habit of trying to visualize and define setting helps me build the story like a Tetris game, using whatever blocks "fall down" first, seemingly by chance. It happens even when the blocks "disappear", so to speak. I tend to write too much description, and then hack out some of it to make sentences flow better. But it's in my head, and the dropped parts may reappear in a functional capacity, later.
Some examples.
( Spoilers to Till Death, so nyah, read it first :D )

Woot, battle and scene choreography. I haven't GMed in years. And for once the characters didn't immediately go scampering off to the wrong end of the dungeon! Er, anyway...

Angst and hokey bits! GRIGNR!
Oct. 18th, 2006 06:43 pmBwah. I should not bwah over this cheesy story, but I do so bwah. This is too much fun.
I have written most of it now in shorthand or in full, and it's wound up so full of every damn fantasy adventure cliché that I feel like I should go back and rewrite it with "emerald orbs" and "flashing foot of blinding steel" thrown in there somewhere. And possibly a tediously-honed rat's pelvis.***
The scary thing is how much it resembles a typical Final Fantasy plot. ALL the bad, and ALL the good, hopefully! Why do we love these games... or classic Trek... or half the science fiction/fantasy out there when it's often so very predictable?
*** If you don't understand the references, read and weep. Eye of Argon, the worst fantasy fiction ever written. There can be only one.

FFX fanfic... here we go again.
Oct. 17th, 2006 08:58 pmDangit, I have a few short papers I should be writing. Oh well. Best not to begrudge the muse when she stops by, whatever she's wearing.

More FFX fanfic junk food.
Oct. 16th, 2006 06:25 pmIt's strangely liberating to be writing a crapass fic purely for fun, instead of laboring to hone every word.

FFX fanfic
Oct. 16th, 2006 05:28 amBah. That gratuitously cheesy AU fanfic I posted a rough draft of ages ago under friendslock refuses to die. I give up. Here. Make of it what you will. A new bit just wrote itself when I was trying to poke at Reurrection again. Some of you know where this is headed; it will be crossposted in the appropriate place when the time comes.
Four chapters should probably get it out of my system. Here's ch. 1.
