Our Story Thus Far: Trying to thwart a new Sin bent on destroying temples, Summoner Isaaru and Auron hatch a plan to rescue Djose's fayth. Most of the Crusaders in the operation are kept in the dark, especially Captain Luzzu, who is suspected of having some way of communicating with Sin.

"Sir Auron, I must protest! You mean to tell me they're not even guardians? They should never have been permitted—"

"Neither are you, Father," Elma said.

The priest stood spreadeagled in the doorway of the Chamber of the Fayth, blocking the workers who had been dismantling its frame. "Your presence here is sheer outrage! Your men have defiled the Cloister of Trials, desecrated the fayth's sanctuary! Why, it will take us years to repair the damage!"

"If there's anything left to repair," Pacce said.

"Hey," Maroda said. "Isaaru's communing with the fayth, remember? If you want your aeon in one piece, I respectfully suggest you shut up."

Dreamwidth let me update the date on a post I prepared and posted privately last week, so I thought it would show up oneveryone's dash when I set it public and changed the date to yesterday.

But it did not. So if you didn't see that a new chapter of Love Her and Despair is up, here it is!

Me and my bizarre shoulder kink. *hides face* I can't remember what possessed me to let slip this personal foible, but I can't really regret the indiscretion, since Flynn-the-Cat keeps catering to it.

Putting this here for ease of future ogling; thank you!

Braids

...so I can find it later. (Of course, I can look back on her dA as well).

Thank you so much!

...Rikku, Yuna and Lulu playing with each other's hair. And braids, because braiding hair (or having someone else braid one's hair) is fun and soothing.
auronlu: (behindyou)
...because it's Mintywolf's birthday!

and then I did another thing, because the first thing was coming out awful!

And on the second thing, I used onionskinning and still screwed up an arm, but at least this is kinda sorta what was in my head!

Lulu + Yuna: Sin's Return
by ~auronlu on deviantART

I really REALLY really wish I hadn't lost my art skills. I have an image in my head, but it won't come out. And arthritis means I can't do much at a time, which is one reason I got out of the habit. BUT I WANT TO DRAW THIS THING DAMMIT.

(I was initially trying to draw Yuna arriving in Besaid, getting her first glimpse of goth girl standing aloof from everyone else and watching her.)

i keep looking up twelve year old and seven year old girls on image search, trying to find art references, and being paranoid that someone's going to think I'm an awful person. :(

They're 13 and 8 in the picture above. Poor Yuna; it must've upset her more than anyone else in Spira when Sin came back.
auronlu: Rosa showing Rydia a mage's staff. (ffiv)
I'm always interested in mentoring and big sister / little sister dynamics between female characters, so of course I latched onto the early interactions between Rydia and Rosa in FFIV. That scene on Mt. Hobbs inspired me to sketch this:

Rydia and Rosa, Final Fantasy IV

I've written Fran tutoring Penelo in black magic, Fran tutoring Lulu (of all people), and some Yuna and Lulu magic-meta, so this slots into that trope.

Two of my favorite fanartists posting the same night?  Gah.

[personal profile] leyna  has just served up a five-star banquet of incredible FF fanart, paintings that include Balthier, Fang, Lulu — who should now be in a crossover adventuring party full of witty banter and icy put-downs — plus cameos by Lightning, Squall, Namingway (who?) and some Type-O character.

Go. Ogle. Swoon.

SQUEE.

Go look! Latest panel in MintyWolf's graphic novel on Lulu's childhood. (Go here to start reading if you haven't seen it before).

Yet another recommendation for [livejournal.com profile] mintywolf's graphic novel for Lulu's childhood, Guardian. New page up!

EDIT: ALSO, APROPOS OF NOTHING...

... Sissy PMed me with this fanart of Auron. I blame Spira Claus.
auronlu: (Yuna's Final Aeon)
[livejournal.com profile] mintywolf, artist of that Lulu graphic novel I've been reccing, just left me an unexpected and wonderful fanart.

It illustrates a scene in the "Eight of Swords" chapter of Love Her and Despair, when Yu Yevon clamped down hard on Lulu for defying its will and taking too many liberties with Sin to aid her friends. As usual, the dream-interior of Sin is fashioned from its prisoner's hopes, loves, and fears.

Full-sized version is probably NSFW:

Eight of Swords
by ~DippyWerewolf on deviantART

I love all of it, but especially the Yu Yevon glyph in blood. When I tried and failed to illustrate this scene, I sketched the shadow of the rune printed on the snow, but this is more dramatic.

Also, every one of Auron's swords is perfectly reproduced. Beautiful work.

And Lulu's expression and posture say, "Bite me." Which is exactly right. She couldn't do much at this point in the story, but she could at least be cussedly stubborn.

(Thanks again!)
auronlu: (egads!)
While watching the prologue of The Hobbit, there was one unexpected item which caught my eye.

VERY minor spoilers:

Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned... )
auronlu: (Fang)
So I was pawing through more of [personal profile] leyna  's fantastic fanart thanks to the new LJ --> DW refugee friending meme.

I'm sure that I've recced her wonderful Lulu portrait in the past. (large image warning. Bonus: Fran portrait!)

It's worth digging through her whole journal. For Final Fantasy fans, I want to recommend a couple of Fang paintings, one with Vanille and one sparring practice scene with Lightning in which, so help me, Fang is tickling that exposed bit of tummy on Ms. Supersoldier's uniform. My interpretation is that Fang is attempting to seduce or simply pester, while Lightning doesn't know whether to break character and squirm or just chop off the offending foot.

However, it's the Vanille/Fang "You Are My Only Home" painting that I especially wish to rec. Break out the angst piano, folks; it's the Last Lesbians in the World.

>> Both Fang paintings here.

ETA: I just looked at the Fang/Vanille again, and you should go. Look at it now. Even if you don't bally know the characters. The colors are gorgeous.

In other news, I have a happy dilemma: do I post all 4800 5100 words of Chapter 49 or break it into two installments? I may go with the two-installments thing for mugs and because that way I can keep working on the next chapter with more lead time. On the other hand, it really doesn't have a comfortable breakpoint.

2218 / 50000 words. 4% done!

[livejournal.com profile] mintywolf has posted another couple of panels of her Lulu graphic novel, currently dramatizing her childhood and relationship with Lady Ginnem. Five pages so far, already a good story.

Lots of heart-tug moments. Great FFX backstory. Clicky the banner to get to the table of contents.

Random web browsing occasionally takes me to Japanese fanart sites.

Not at all my usual pattern of thought, but I like this Auron / Jecht piece.

Reminds me a little of nidrig's painting style.

Also this one of the Farplane (Warning, some very NSFW fanart elsewhere on that site, but that particular artist's work is safe. I am keenly disappointed to find that this is not, in fact, Auron, Braska and Jecht going clubbing.)
auronlu: (Yuna's Final Aeon)

Five pages of it so far, but oh, I hope this story continues:

Guardian

With Ginnem!

There's an image of them out in the rain with Ginnem holding up an umbrella that I really like. Can't explain.

I was never a skilled artist, but 15-20 years ago, I used to have amateur skills. They've atrophied through neglect.

Auron iPad Doodle
by ~auronlu on deviantART

I'm trying to get in the habit of drawing again. This was a quick doodle using the free Wacom Bamboo app for iPad. I'm still getting used to the squishy stylus.
auronlu: (finishthatsentence)
Have you ever stumbled across something in an old folder you really don't remember writing or drawing? This is clearly my clumsy drawing, and it's a scene I am sure I wrote at some point, but I'd completely forgotten I tried to illustrate it.

So. Doodle. Set about a year prior to FFX, Lulu and Luzzu.

Title: "Message"

(If you've not played the game in a while, it's the moment when Lulu learned what had happened to Chappu.)

I've always liked Luzzu, partly because of his rueful "she hit me, too" comment about Lulu (direct Japanese translation: "She has furious fists!"), and partly because he's trying so hard to keep the cadets from getting themselves redshirted.

The following ficbit is a backstory bridge picking up with the moment when Luzzu got on Lulu's bad side, segueing to the "Lulu's Contempt" FMV in which she rips Wakka a new one, and indirectly providing backstory for the "Kimahri Pounces* Tidus" FMV the next morning. Not all that exciting, but, character stuff, which used to be my forte.

She Hit Me, Too... )

Okay, this is weird.

So here's my favorite incredibly minor video game char, Elma from FFX.

And here's an awesome fan art of Captain America, Thor and Iron Man as women.

by ~kreugan on deviantART

So apparently Elma is Iron Man wearing a short linen kilt. (also the hexagon knee pads have been transplanted to her elbows, although it's not as obvious here, but that odd shape is exactly the same)

Hee. When I haven't gotten any fandom done, I rec Mugs. I like this.

Watercolor doodle of Auron, Braska, Jecht -- simple and worksafe.

Sometimes I wish Squeenex had done an FFX prequel. Then I realize how badly they'd bungle it, and I'm grateful that fellow fans have covered Braska/Auron/Jecht (with or without the UST) far better.
