I keep my Aurikku grumbling to a minimum, because really, my philosophy is, I may not AGREE with what others doing to certain characters, I may think it distorts/dishonors/ignores the basic nature of those characters, but that's just my opinion, and (most of all) we all have different tastes. You go have your fun, I'll have mine. As long as it's in fiction and not reality, it's not hurting anybody to write pedophilia and all the other kinks.
That said.
I sometimes stop by Aurikkus because half of it works for me -- it stems from thinking Auron is a cool dude, and on that much we can agree.
BUT AIGH MAKE IT STOOOOOP.
Saturday, I watched a silly YouTube Aurikku video with a perky J-pop sort of song where the chorus was "I want my Samurai!" EARWORM AUGH. I am not equipped to handle "perky" for extended periods.
Yet at this point, I would be almost happy for Small World or the Wizard of Oz "Lollipop Guild" to get stuck in my head just to dislodge "I want my Samurai!"
*goes off to find the awesome "Love Him When He's Gone" Auron video in an attempt to get PERKYPERKYHYPERPERKY out of my skull*

Date: 2006-07-24 09:50 pm (UTC)I've seen one excellent Aurikku on Ficwad where it's Rikku holding a wake for him in the desert. That worked! And Soldier of Spira is so well-written that I can enjoy it. But there's the basic barrier in that 'ship is one I can't get past.
I have no problem with Aurikku from the "horny 15-year-old gets crush on guy old enough to be her father" angle, because it happens. The reverse makes me cringe mostly because of real life experience with such situations. It may sound sexy, but the power dynamics between an adult and a child are just too risky. The chance of causing longterm damage or distortion right when a girl is discovering and forming her own sexual and adult identity is too high, even in cases where it is consensual and welcomed.
Also, I can't believe Auron would be interested, because she just doesn't seem his type to me, and in what little interaction they have, when he's not acting fed up with her, he's acting paternal. Then again, I can understand doubt of any Auron 'ship, because he's so cut off from others by inclination and situation.

I also think that if he was going to be in a relationship it would be a forever kind of deal and I think he'd feel too guilty about the necessarily temporary nature of the rest of his stay on Spira to contemplate such a thing.
Still, I am interested in a wide variety of stories and so those opinions of mine are very much not set in stone.
