I keep my Aurikku grumbling to a minimum, because really, my philosophy is, I may not AGREE with what others doing to certain characters, I may think it distorts/dishonors/ignores the basic nature of those characters, but that's just my opinion, and (most of all) we all have different tastes. You go have your fun, I'll have mine. As long as it's in fiction and not reality, it's not hurting anybody to write pedophilia and all the other kinks.
That said.
I sometimes stop by Aurikkus because half of it works for me -- it stems from thinking Auron is a cool dude, and on that much we can agree.
BUT AIGH MAKE IT STOOOOOP.
Saturday, I watched a silly YouTube Aurikku video with a perky J-pop sort of song where the chorus was "I want my Samurai!" EARWORM AUGH. I am not equipped to handle "perky" for extended periods.
Yet at this point, I would be almost happy for Small World or the Wizard of Oz "Lollipop Guild" to get stuck in my head just to dislodge "I want my Samurai!"
*goes off to find the awesome "Love Him When He's Gone" Auron video in an attempt to get PERKYPERKYHYPERPERKY out of my skull*

Date: 2006-07-24 09:50 pm (UTC)I've seen one excellent Aurikku on Ficwad where it's Rikku holding a wake for him in the desert. That worked! And Soldier of Spira is so well-written that I can enjoy it. But there's the basic barrier in that 'ship is one I can't get past.
I have no problem with Aurikku from the "horny 15-year-old gets crush on guy old enough to be her father" angle, because it happens. The reverse makes me cringe mostly because of real life experience with such situations. It may sound sexy, but the power dynamics between an adult and a child are just too risky. The chance of causing longterm damage or distortion right when a girl is discovering and forming her own sexual and adult identity is too high, even in cases where it is consensual and welcomed.
Also, I can't believe Auron would be interested, because she just doesn't seem his type to me, and in what little interaction they have, when he's not acting fed up with her, he's acting paternal. Then again, I can understand doubt of any Auron 'ship, because he's so cut off from others by inclination and situation.

Date: 2006-07-24 10:15 pm (UTC)I also agree with you about the fact that Auron isn't going to fall in love with anyone. I see him as driven by one goal, sort of like in many ghost stories. I also think that if he was going to be in a relationship it would be a forever kind of deal and I think he'd feel too guilty about the necessarily temporary nature of the rest of his stay on Spira to contemplate such a thing.
Still, I am interested in a wide variety of stories and so those opinions of mine are very much not set in stone.

Date: 2006-07-24 11:59 pm (UTC)My preference for Auron-'ship is Aulu, but I don't really have strong pairing tendencies for the game at all. My game of preference is FF6, and none shall ever replace it, sadly *lol*

Date: 2006-07-25 02:20 am (UTC)Of course, my deal with the pairing's not exactly the same as yours, but close enough. Let Auron have his serious girls, like Lu or even Yuna, and leave Rikku to the equally perky Tidus.
Was it to "Butterfly"? -_- I'm actually working on a Cloud/Yuffie video at the moment to the song. I'd thought of doing a Tidus/Rikku one to it, but it brought too many notions of Auron (who is more of a samurai than Tidus) for me to stomach it.
ps consider yourself friended, I keep forgetting to get around to it. But we cross paths enough, lol. ^_^

Date: 2006-07-25 06:25 am (UTC)Bottle-of-Shine ... I've seen Aurikkus where Auron was gushingly attracted to her, didn't seem to feel more than a twinge of guilt about her age, wasn't able to control himself and jumped her bones, actively hurt her, or was reduced to Wuv, Twue Wuv. Also, a lot of Aurikku art tends to make him look a lot closer to her age, which isn't what he is (mea culpa, but I am trying to learn to draw wrinkles better.) Soldier of Spira works as far as I read it because it doesn't change Auron. He still sounds like himself. I didn't get as far as him sleeping with her though.
But I honestly didn't start this post to talk about Aurikku, which if I think about it too much always brings me back to my impotent rage about a bright, sweet, intelligent teenaged daughter of a friend of mine who reminds me very much of Rikku, and who will never get the chance of learning about sex the slow, fumbling way because she had it forced on her by a man whom she trusted as a father. I hate it when I think of Auron and this man in the same thought, unless I'm contemplating beheading.
But bah, I didn't mean to go there again, I was just grouching about a really annoying song!
(And apologies if i sound sharp-tempered; after 5 days of 90+ degree weather with no A/C, and a bunch of college students partying from about 10 PM unto 3AM nearly every night in my apartment complex when I'm trying and failing to work on a Master's exam, with a 6AM wake-up call at dawn from the shrieking toddlers upstairs... Lulu's fury overdrive is how I'm feeling most of the time right now.)

Date: 2006-07-25 07:12 am (UTC)It's been in the 110s lately, but the last couple of days it's been overcast in the afternoon so it's been bearable. I wouldnt know what I'd do without a/c ;_;
That sucks so very very much about your friend. :/ That would piss me off incredibly too.
I think the worst fic I read with Auron it in involved Tidus and the lady luck dress sphere. -_- *shudders*
"Butterfly" is a DDR song, and it's probably the one they used. It's very Aurikkuy. I love the song, but I cant think of FFX and it at the same time without getting a bad case of the headdesk.

Date: 2006-07-25 05:30 am (UTC)As for Aurikku, I could rant about that at length, but I'd just end up saying all the same things the others have, so I will resist. I had to write an Aurikku once, for a challenge, and it was incredibly difficult. I think I made it work, but I almost had to tear the man down and rebuild him from scratch to keep him even vaguely in character, and he still never felt quite right to me.
