[livejournal.com profile] owlmoose posted one LaFontain Tribute. I found an old interview with him that's hilarious:

I treasure the internet: we still can't honor everyone in the world for what they do, but at least now when you hear, "Don LaFontaine passed away..." on the news, you can say, "Who? Oh, HIM!" and celebrate a life.

Here's to you, Mr. Voice!

Edit: Oh, here's the GEICO commercial. Heh. I'd heard it on the radio, but I don't watch TV much so I'd never seen it. So utterly random!

I only knew right away that it was him because of that Geico car insurance commercial where they have the 'celebrity' story POV.

so sad. :(

Oh, awesome video. Thanks for finding it! As I said in my own journal, I love that he seemed game to poke fun at his own work. I have tremendous respect for anyone who can do that.

The weird thing is, in poking around with some of these interviews, I actually found some quotes I may use for my dissertation, since a lot of what I'm writing about is the non-semantic uses of language (this in protest to the "words are inherently meaningless symbols to which we assign content" school of linguistics). Several folks in the business, including LaFontaine, talk about how simple words and even clichés pack a punch beyond their meanings. Now if I can just find a more reputable way to cite them than "E! interview illegally posted on YouTube." :)

Awww. Apparently LaFontaine had an email contact on his website where you could ask him to do voiceovers for voicemail and just about anything, and he'd do them for fun in his free time. Here's some kid's school report (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3Ynpt6eYYM) with an intro blurb... on CHICKENS.
