I was basing it on this bit of game dialogue just before Operation Mi'hen:
Wakka "Lu, you knew?" Lulu "Luzzu told me...before we left." Luzzu "She hit me, too."
Lulu might be referring to their departure on the earlier pilgrimage with Zuke. However, all her friends were standing around her when she said that, so I had the feeling that by "we" she meant not only herself and Wakka, but Yuna and company. After all, Luzzu didn't tell Wakka about his recruiting Chappu until then, when he could've had that conversation sooner. Also, at that point in the game, the pilgrimage with Father Zuke hadn't yet been mentioned.
Chappu died about a year before the game. During Tidus' first night in Besaid, Wakka said he got the news the day of the tournament the year before.
I also noticed that Lulu and Kimahri were absent when Wakka, the Aurochs, Tidus, and Yuna were all sitting/standing around the bonfire that night. That seemed like as good a time as any for Luzzu to take Lulu aside the night before her departure -- especially if she'd gone to talk to him anyway -- and clear his conscience.
