The funny thing is though, with how things actually happened, he didn't try to reach out to Sephiroth at all. He literally did the "strike first, ask questions later" (well more like "strike first and then express how angry and upset you are in words, in case the striking did not make that clear enough"). Though he does do empathy later, in this case it's something he wrote in after the fact--maybe because he wanted Sephiroth to have understood how much he hurt him, but it wasn't possible for him to express back then. (...If he'd tried, giving away his approach, he probably would have just ended up like Tifa and then they'd both have bled out to death.) But yeah, he's definitely emoting more in the telling of the Nibelheim incident, and I think it shows just how powerfully his feelings have gotten tied up in this one event and sets up how the pursuit of Sephiroth breaks down afterward.
