Dissidia is Crossover Crack, but I haven't yet played it. However, even without Dissidia as an excuse, there's a lot of Final Fantasy characters who could collide in intriguing ways with minimal fiddling. Sev and Rina's playthrough of ALL THE FINAL FANTASY games in [community profile] moogle_university has gotten me thinking about various possibilities.

For instance, Aerith. Flower girl by day, goddess by afterlife. I see no reason to limit the Lifestream to straightforward temporal progression, so she could be anywhere. (In Final Fantasy X, we see that the Farplane and dream-Zanarkand and dreams are all connected via the spiritual current/energies of the pyreflies. I tend think of that plane-beyond-life-and-death as "the Aerith zone," i.e. the Lifestream in FFVII).

That was why I had Aerith bump into Auron in the Farplane in my "Going Somewhere" ficbit, which unfortunately went nowhere. I thought they might've made an odd couple like old Doctor Who, back when the Doctor and his companion were not involved romantically and just mucked around the multiverse getting into trouble and putting the world of paradise towers to rights. (Except that Aerith acts like the Timelord; she baffles Auron rather than the reverse).

Auron, as unsent who seems to linger past his expiration date, could appear in dream or spirit planes.

Another is Ellone. Her odd time projection ability would allow her to bring almost any characters together. There was a lovely ficbit by Arglefraster with Ellone speaking to Auron, but unfortunately it's been taken down.

Another is Minwu. I have no good grounds for Minwu to be jumping universes, except that he's one of those characters who gets his own Aerith Zone adventure after he's dead (Dawn of Souls). Also, Sev's wonderful Sight fanfic about Minwu has a complex web of dream/vision tie-ins with other FFs.

Another is Fran. I was intrigued by her ability to open an aerial pathway through the forest, as if opening a wormhole or portal. I realize that in FFXII, that pathway may have been there all along, just hidden until she invoked the forest-magic to reveal it. But what if she really can open myst-paths connecting places where nature itself is aware and alive? That was my flimsy excuse for my Blue Word Lulu/Fran crossover. (Pr0n warning). Cheesy justifications for lemons aside, Fran lives hundreds of years and ... well, what happens to the Viera? Do they go to the Aerith Zone as well?

Another is Rydia, who spends much of her life in the domain of the Eidolons. FFIV presents the Feymarch as a real place, but since Eidolons/Fayth/Espers/etc are spirits, I can't help thinking once again of the dream-world of FFX and the Lifestream of FFVII, all of them existing in that spirit-world membrane between the living world and death. Also, there's the Feywood in Final Fantasy XII where the barriers between reality and myst are clearly breaking down. I would love to see Fran and Rydia encounter each other in that space.

Thanks to time travel, Noel, Serah and Mog could stray just about anywhere. (I loved XIII-2 for the simple reason that it was the first game I've ever played that really explored the possibilities of time travel and alternate timelines). Lightning, also, has landed in the Aerith Zone.

Reaching back to the early games, Final Fantasy I-III and V all deal with Four Warriors of Light, each game with references to previous generations of Warriors of Light and cyclical conflicts. What if the crystals bear the imprints of the previous Warriors of Light like Fayth statues, and that's why they confer "jobs" to the WoLs in III and V?

What if Ingus in Final Fantasy III is the reincarnation of Garland, who was supposed to be the best of the knights before he succumbed to evil? In FFIII, he atones for his previous life, and Sarah/Sara is with him once more.

Finally, there's all the Cids. I've always joked that Cid really is a Time Lord, with busted reincarnations that make him lose his memory. The airship is just his TARDIS!

What FF crossovers do you imagine? Have you written? (And please, grab any ideabunny here you like...consider these prompts!)

Addendum: I recently read Estirose Final Fantasy II ficbit which includes Arc (why not?), and I just stumbled across a Rydia and Auron ficbit by [personal profile] owlmoose that I need to read when I'm not listening to a baseball game.

I was going to mention that ficbit, and then I saw you already found it. :) The Farplane makes an excellent crossover mechanism.

Don't forget the giant crossover machine that is the Kingdom Hearts series. Even if you don't use any of the KH-specific mechanics or characters, it provides an excellent excuse for characters from any series to meet any other.

Eh, they aren't any better integrated into the first game. Although I do recall "Leon" saying something about not using the name Squall any more because Squall lost someone important to him, the implication being that Rinoa was either lost or separated from the others when the Heartless got their world. (Also, in the first game, Leon's VA was David Boreanz, which was just too perfect. The substitute in KHII was not nearly as right.)

I once started a fic that brought a good chunk of the FFX/X-2 cast into the world of KH, but it never quite found enough of a plot to keep it rolling. I still think about going back to it though.

You mean Mog from FF6?

FF4 and 8 seem to get crossed over a fair bit. Sorceresses and knights and all that. I especially like Pandora (looong fic, cool meta), but pretty much all the 4/8 crossovers on A03 are good.

I HOPE YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT ALL OF THIS LIGHT WARRIOR / CRYSTAL TALK HAS DONE TO ME >.>

Because yes, of course Ingus is some kind of incarnation of both Warrior of Light / Garland together, and this time Sara is his partner, not his prisoner.

and of COURSE Bartz and Lenna and Faris all hear these voices in their sleep, just dream-murmurs, and it's Luneth and Refia and Arc and Ingus all arguing (and Refia probably insulted the Dawn Warriors too); and when Lenna picks up Monk, it's Ingus that shows her how to use it; and when Krile grabs the White Mage crystal, she and Arc have a long exciting conversation about physics and animals

SERIOUS COMMENT THO

I actually really love crossover fic in general - the mechanisms are always as fascinating to me as the fics themselves, if done with some thought - and FF is ripe with possibilities here.

FFI - basically a giant time loop already, and there are echoes of I all the way down all of the FFs; easily done

FFII - I agree that Minwu's a good candidate here - time travel seems to = ~magical~ powers and Minwu's got those - but I guess anyone in Dawn of Souls might be a candidate too

FFIII - CAN I ALSO NOMINATE DOGA AND UNEI? Unei was in a dream world for like a thousand years; there's some crossover potential there. Plus yeah sure they died, but uh, "died" in FF doesn't mean that much. I shall place Doga and Unei in the Lifestream with Aerith, where they can totally creep on everyone and generally troll life. I am now writing this too

FFIV - I agree re: Feymarch: it's not only a world of spirits but a place where time provably moves differently than in the rest of the world. Also crossover potential: the flying moon. And the Lunar Whale, I guess, although LOLZ. SO not only Rydia, but maybe Golbez (although as much as fangirls like him I am always kind of meh Golbez) -- plus, I have this headcanon about Palom and Porom's Twin magic: they can cast Comet, which is Time Magic in FFV -- might their Twincast be capable of more Time Magic too?

FFV - The Void is its own crossover device really; also the meteors could travel from one world to another already (although those worlds were connected). Also Galuf's dead, and while I can't really see him drifting ethereal in the Lifestream, maybe I can stick him on Josef's team of Dead Baddies Still Kicking Ass?

FFVI - mention of the War of the Magi might tie in a previous game; there's the Esper World, but otherwise, this game's reasonably self-contained. Terra's really the only one?

FFVII - Aerith and the Lifestream, definitely. I don't really know enough about the Compilation to add any more

FFVIII - Ellone is an obvious and definite yes. She's her own crossover mechanism! There's also a moon tie-in (which I think is why IV/VIII get crossed over frequently), crazy Sorceress magic, and Time Compression (which seems a more malign nothing-space than, say, the Lifestream -- maybe it's the Void?)

FFIX I don't remember a lot about but there were crystals in that?

FFX - Auron and the Farplane, but also anyone traveling or touched by Sin could at least have some crazy crossover dreams.

!!!! THE AEONS ARE THEIR OWN CROSSOVER META

some day I plan to write serious FIC about how the AEONS / EIDOLONS / ESPERS etc (sorry for the caps lock but my phone thinks those are worth shouting I guess) actually function and serve in the different worlds.

Aside from Dissidia, I always had the sneaking suspicion that a (living) person could ride the FF6 Phantom Train to a number of different places, possibly including other games in the series.

I find the Lifestream/ Farplane so interesting and it does make for good crossover material.

CROSSOVERS

not gonna lie this project is also birthing all the crossover bunnies in my brain. I have had on the back burner for quite some time an FF8/FF4 crossover (because I love me some parallel structure) that largely revolves around Golbez and Seifer working out their damage together in interesting ways while trying to solve world-threatening problems and giving them both the chance to be the hero (because much like Ned Stark, they both could have been heroes of a different story.)

The linkage through Light Warriors is really interesting. My friend [personal profile] celeloriel once posited a One Spira theory by which she tried to connect all the FF games, and it was awesome. There are also explicit canonical links in some games; FF9 is the stellar standout there (Ramuh's tale of Joseph; Cloud's sword; Kain's lance; MOTHER FUCKING GARLAND).
