I didn't realize how deaf I was.

I just picked up a set of $30 headphones that have a bit more oomph to them, popped in a video from my "Adrenaline" playlist that I use to get myself prepped before writing a fight sequence, and...

EARS FLAT AGAINST SKULL.

My eyeballs are rolling around a bit, I think. Is this what the world sounds like to most of you?!!!

Good grief.

I now have to play all my games again with these headphones. I do have stereo speakers, but by the time the sound reaches my ears, it's a bit muddy. I have to use subtitles when watching most movies to understand the more softspoken lines.

It is rather amazing, that first time when you realize that headphones suddenly mean you can 'hear'! I'm hearing impaired also, and if you're getting 'muddy' now trust me and go speak to an audiologist. It's better to keep track of your hearing, so that if the loss is progressive, things can be done to counteract it.

I tested a bit borderline in 1st grade. It's not that much worse, but the fact that I'm using subtitles is probably a wake-up call I should've noticed earlier. :)

Hee! Did you ever see the remake of the Stepford Wives? When Bette Midler picks up the discarded t-shirt featuring Viggo and sadly asks, "Viggo?!"? God, I swear I've got the weirdest memory for stuff that just doesn't matter. You said "Viggo", I thought "Viggo?!", and now I'm blabbering. Bad movie, funny scene.

Anyway! I dated a hot little bartender in college. I'm beginning to think all of those hours in that club messed up my hearing a bit, though it might also be because she was a very loud, very creative curser. Never had trouble with my hearing until I dated her and now I have to worry about what might happen every time I go to a concert or out with my friends to dance. Kinda frustrating.

Viggo sounds like that even with my hearing aids in. x_x Actually I have the most trouble understanding women, most men are in the range of my strongest hearing - so Strider and Arwen are like the inaudible duo which is probably better for my sanity.

I am similarly deaf, since I also have to use subtitles for most things I watch, regardless of the language. And my headphones – a pair of Sony wonders that are about eight years old as of this posting – are a godsend.

Funny, though: Because I am a stepdad, these days, I can always hear when my stepkids are talking shit, regardless of where they are in the apartment. Must be a supernatural gift. :-)
