Thankye!

I've picked up many of Tolkien's bad habits, including the odd practice of using italics for snippets of dialog.

Fooey. Now it looks wrong.

I think I know why I did that. My grasp of grammar is unfortunately somewhat instinctive, but I was trying to do this:

"Whenever a word is being used to refer to the word itself, not the thing it represents, we put it in italics." -- Source (http://www.speedysnail.com/limericks/words_as_words.html)

Use italics for "words and letters that are referred to as words or letters" (Gibaldi 95). For example, write "The term American Indian is inclusive of over 500 Federally recognized ethnic communities."
--MLA crib sheet (http://www.docstyles.com/mlacrib.htm#Sec32)

I'm not sure if mine is an appropriate application of the rule. I know I tend to overuse italics.
