Well, it was [livejournal.com profile] wired_lizard's idea, really: we first met in about 1999 while very active in MYST fandom, so when I did a "challenge me!" meme, she suggested a Catherine & Lulu piece knowing my adoration of Catherine.

The ending of this piece is a little confusing because of the order in which I gave the two halves of the epilogue: dramatic tension in the Lulu-burns-the-book scene with "where's Catherine gone?" (the central theme of MYST, as far as I'm concerned!), then a flashback to Myst Island, answering the question.

The clues are there but a bit buried:
I. During her visits to Besaid, Catherine mentions her sons currently traveling with their father. This has to be before the events of MYST.
II. Lulu burns the book when Vidina is older than S&A were at the time of Catherine's visit. If Vidina's that old, it has to be at least 20 years later, long after the Age of Spira was burned.
III. Atrus and Catherine moved to Tomahna within a couple years of the events of MYST, so the library-cleaning-out-scene has to have happened between I and II.

The book Lulu burned was a link back to MYST, i.e. a MYST linking book.
She did it because Catherine never came back. And Catherine never came back because the SPIRA book got burned, breaking the link in the other direction.

My characterization of Catherine is heavily informed by her visions and personality in the Book of Atrus and Book of D'ni novelizations.
