I did not know this. I was beginning to suspect it, but I was still trying to figure out whether anyone else in the party could see Sephiroth.
Dio's comments confused me. I can't help thinking that the "boy" he mentioned might be a newly-hatched remnant like Kadaj, who DOES look like someone Cloud's age.* But in that case, why did his tattoo say "1"...as if it really is the original Sephiroth? Except it can't be, so I'm confused. First clone, maybe? I don't know. But I'm enjoying puzzling it out, so please no spoilers on that question. ;)
In some ways, even though it's my second time playing the game, I'm like Cloud -- it was a good ten years ago that I played, so i don't remember all the details, especially the "unreliable narrator" details that turned out to be other than they appeared. I remember that Cloud's flashback is a muddle because he's forgotten Zack, but a lot of the other stuff is a blur now.
*I totally didn't understand the way clones were presented in this game when I first played; I got to the fiasco with the Black Materia, realized that not everything was the way Cloud perceived it, and from then on I was never clear what the heck the "clones" were or where Sephiroth was or what "Reunion" meant. Was that all in Cloud's imagination? Were the clones real, or were they illusions or presences that only he could see? But if only he could see them, then why were there all these Sephiroth sightings, and who was sticking Sephiroth's sword in people? Wait...you're telling me that *wasn't* Sephiroth we've been chasing for the whole game? I....whatever, I think I'm just gonna finish this game and not worry about it; this is beyond me!
It wasn't until Advent Children that I started to figure some of this out. Bishie Boys on Bikes were silly, but at least they explained to me what the "Reunion" thing meant and what the "clones" were. Except that they were real and solid, and there was no question that Tifa and other people could see them.
