Celes: A hundred times YES on the "Spirit as pure as snow." Your comment crystallizes and puts into words the doubts that were niggling me during this sequence. I've only played this game once partway, so the characters haven't totally gelled for me, but "spirit pure as snow" threw me off. What, she's a Terra clone?

I let it go, but it was muddling my understanding of the next scene. Was she that oblivious to Kefka's machinations until now? Has she been clueless about what the empire's been doing? Was she stuck doing things she didn't like?

I like the GBA translation MUCH better. That allows me to question whether Celes has really broken with the empire in her heart and joined the Returners' cause. Outrage at Kefka doesn't necessarily mean disloyalty to Gestahl.

I think my view of Locke is colored by Rina's, so I see him as a likeable fellow, although his tendency to put every single woman on a damsel pedestal is problematic. It is a pity, though, that Celes winds up slotted into possible love interest arc; she would've been a good Lightning-characfer candidate. (Lightning is certainly NOT pure as the driven snow; she's a complicated mix of noble and ruthless, compassionate and callous.)

... I utterly HATED Ultros in my last playthrough. I had not yet played any of the early games (save for V, since I'd gotten anthology), and the silliness and randomness did not fit at all with the more real-world style of the FFs on which I cut my teeth. (I mean, I refused to refer to any of Lulu's dolls in my fanfic for years because I hated having a serious character marred by incongruous silliness, so I am REALLY suspicious of silly/cutesy stuff where it doesn't seem to ft.) I am a little more reconciled now to the goofy stuff in early FFs, but I imagine I'm going to be pretty durned fed up with Ultros by the end. He would've been a more plausible villainous sidekick for Mr. Tree.
(Except that would intrude on Gilgy, who as you noted, gets a character arc. *Salutes fellow FF5 fan*)

...I had Shadow as party leader as well crying, "Inhuman!" as well. I gathered it was supposed to be Sabin's line, so I quoted rather than showing the confusing screencap.

i wish I didn't have such trouble with Sabin's skills. Anything requiring a diagonal input is basically right out, between my arthritis making joystick precision dicey and my emulator only recognizing 90-degree inputs on the D-pad. So he's something of a nuisance character to me, whereas Cyan's 1x special attack takes zero skills to pull off.
