I'm working my way through it as well, and I appreciate all the things you mentioned here; I'm only up to Oerba but I'm liking it more than I expected to. I nearly cancelled my pre-order over what I've heard about the ending, and I'm still angry enough to spit nails about it, but...the game genuinely is both good and fun.
