Crime-fighting dead duo:

Picture much larger than the actual 2-inch figs.

Somewhat ironically, my old "Aerith and Auron" ficbit named Going Somewhere never went anywhere.

I have this odd bit of head canon that they went off to be quirky ghosts, badgering people, rubbernecking on the silliness of humanity, and occasionally intervening on a lark, especially when it might spoil the neatly-crafted chess games of gods bent on directing Destiny.

Aerith would be the instigator, and Auron would stump along being amused (or bemused) backup. I liked the fact that it would make a good "partners" story without sexual dynamics, which is painfully rare in fanfic (including mine). But I never could come up with a plot, beyond the vague sense that it would bridge the Al Bhed and Midgar Shinras.

And in other news, I don't know what came over me, but I have acquired dustcatchers, including the two pictured above. I've been so sparing about not collecting Things -- save for one grumpy guardian watching over my hard drive -- since I cleared out my apartment about eight years ago.

But I like these silly little things. I guess I've mellowed. At one time I would not have had the sense of humor to see my favorite video game mythological characters turned into chibis.

I've got everybody except Rikku, Balthier and Fran (wah).

Although mine are currently packed away while I remodel my office, I think I have the complete set of these little chibis. Yes, they're dustcatchers but they were a gift and way too cute.

The adventures of Aerith and Auron oddly make far too much sense. ;)

I wish that buddy fic and gen was more popular in fandom, but the big emphasis on shipping seems to push everything else to the side.

I had never thought of Auron and Aerith as any sort of duo. Then again, I find myself woefully unimaginative when it comes to cross-overs. However, I like this idea a lot and I would enjoy reading it, I think. I have the sense that they both have a slightly twisted sense of humour. With Auron it is obvious, I think, but I have begun to suspect this about Aerith more and more as time goes on with not so much evidence. I think it is the gleeful way she encourages Cloud to cross-dress. I heartily agree about the lack of purely friendly fanfiction, which I long for.

Aerith is a funny character; she's got that "innocent flower girl" persona, but the cross-dressing caper and a few other hints suggest she's both tougher and more wordly-wise and downright naughty than she appears. i imagine she and Tifa getting into a drinking contest and going out on the town. (I loved the dynamic between them; a standard western plot would've set them up as rivals, but they hit it off immediately, from what I can tell.)

I have no idea what put it into my head to have her bump into Auron in the Farplane, except that her flowers reminded me of it, and Kingdom Hearts was a very poor answer to the question, "So where did Auron go after he was sent?" An awful lot of my fanfic comes from momenta in canon I found dissatisfying. (Although KH was almost worth it for the "I am king of the dead!" "No wonder no one wants to die" exchange.)

It took me awhile to appreciate that dynamic between Tifa and Aerith as well! I think it's so funny they way they immediately do a huddle as soon as they meet and Cloud is left out in the cold.

I never thought of the connection between the flowers and the Farplane, but I like that concept. All of the afterlife ideas in various Final Fantasy games seem to have a lot of continuity - that idea of returning to the planet when you die.
