I want to hear more about the dream/death imagery. :D
Speaking of how Square put Greek stuff into the characters and stories... I started looking into some of the names and meanings of some of the characters, particularly the aeons.
Valefor is a Christian demon known as the "Duke of Hell". Ifrit is an Islamic creature called a jinn spirit (close reference is like a genie) that embodies fire and considers its race as superior to all and resents the control humans have over them.
Ixion was a Lapiths and husband of Dia but did not pay the bride price for her so her father Deioneus stole Ixion's horses (Ixion in FFX is a unicorn, very similar!). He was killed by Ixion in retaliation thus Ixion became an outlaw but was pitied by Zeus so he came to Olympus. However, he got hot for Hera and pissed off Zeus so he created a "cloud" that looked like Hera that Ixion mated with creating then the race of centaurs. This one has to be my utmost favorite story. hehe
Shiva is pretty well known for his role in Hinduism; though Square made the aeon a female in the game, which is a common mistake I guess for people because of the ending of the name being an -a. Bahamut is an aquatic figure of Arabic mythology, like a fish. However the aeon was based off the role of Bahamut the heroic dragon.
Totally cool tidbits I never realized about some of them. I also recall that the summons creatures in FFVIII included the Aztec god Quetzalcoatl (along with Ifrit again).
