Hmmm. It occurs to me that it varies somewhat by fandom. (Thinking of all the "space lesbians" Doctor Who fanfic with Nyssa/Tegan, Ace/Mel, Romana/Leela, et alia. Classic Who i imperfect in many ways, but the dearth of male characters and the abundance of female companions means the slashers in that particular fandom tend to go the f/f route.)
