I can only read Japanese slowly and fairly painfully, so I don't do much with it. -_- In FF4 I only understood what was going on because I'd played the game several times before. They use a lot of old-fashioned words in FF4 compared to, say, FF6.

I wish I could trade away some of my reading skill for better listening, actually. Although I admit I do like reading terrible Japanese fanfic. (Good fanfic is too hard to read enjoyably.)

I've heard of these Ultimania guides before. I've heard they are uber-hardcore. Ooh, someone has translated the FF4 one! *reading*
