I was originally thinking of Braska's pilgrimage, but I thought of both.
Though by the time we get to Yuna's pilgrimage, I get the feeling that Auron knew *something* was up with Jecht and Tidus. I don't know how he couldn't. He had to be dead to ride Sin. And Zanarkand -- does the game ever make it explicit if dream Zanarkand exists in the real world, like the aeons do? If so, does it exist on some distant island? Could some lost sailor come upon it? Or is it on some netherplane that you can't find unless you're unsent or a dream?
But yes, Auron tells Tidus straight away about Sin, saying it's better he know right away rather than finding out later and becoming emotional at a 'critical moment'. He clearly didn't know the entire story; he wrangled with the plan as much as the rest of them. But I definitely think he had some instinct that bringing Tidus to Spira was significant.
Here's a question -- would Auron become Sin in the place of a friend, if the choice came up? Are his personal loyalties bigger than his loyalty to the world? I learn toward yes, at least in older Auron. Younger Auron, though, I'm not so sure.
